Support A Washington Worker Relief Fund

The federal government has so far failed to adequately protect immigrant communities from the current crisis, we need our state and local governments to step up. NWIRP joined over 430 organizations across Washington State in this letter calling on Governor Inslee and our state legislature to create a “Washington Worker Relief Fund” to provide $100 million in emergency relief to undocumented Washingtonians and to work towards a more permanent system of support for unemployed workers who do not qualify for the current system. Read our press release at this link.

Here’s how you can take action for immigrants in Washington State by vocalizing your support for this effort.

“Governor Inslee,

I’m calling to urge you to include EVERYONE, no matter their immigration status, in any state legislation to support our health, safety and economic well-being in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

More than 250,000 undocumented immigrants call Washington home. These workers make substantial contributions to Washington’s economy, including paying more than $316 million each year in state and local taxes. They are over-represented in industries that have been decimated by the pandemic, including restaurants, hospitality, landscaping and construction.

We must ensure all of us can access the care we need.

I am asking you to include us all by: creating a Washington Worker Relief Fund that provides economic assistance to undocumented Washingtonians and creating a permanent system that gives undocumented immigrants access to unemployment insurance.

The choices you make now to help us weather the outbreak of this virus can also set a better course for the future of our communities. As your constituent, I implore you to make policy choices that help us all, no matter our immigration status.”
